Understanding the part you play
Did you know that you play a very important role in the speed and success of your orthodontic treatment? Think of it as a partnership between you, the orthodontist, and the assistants. Everyone has a job to do!
The orthodontist and staff determine the problem, recommend the treatment, make a plan of action, and carry it out step by step, while your family is there to support you. As the patient, you are responsible for:
- Learning why the teeth are being straightened
- Brushing after eating anything and flossing at least once each day (Click here for an informative video)
- Avoiding hard and sticky foods
- Minimizing sugar in your diet
- Wearing headgear, elastics, or other appliances as requested
- Keeping your appointments and arriving at the office on time
- Reporting lost or broken appliances
It’s worth it to do everything you need to do to make your orthodontic treatment successful! The better you are at doing your part, the faster and more effective your treatment will be.
Dental care
Before any orthodontic treatment, your family dentist should make certain that all cavities have been treated and your gums and underlying bone are free of periodontal disease.
Your orthodontist does not replace your general dentist during the course of treatment! It is important to keep regular visits with your dentist to schedule cleaning and cavity check-ups during your orthodontic care just like you normally would. If you need a referral to a great general dentist, we will happily provide you one.
